One of our members, Jim Crammond teaches a five day class for students to fabricate parts and assemble them for a Windsor Bowback Chair. The five day class begins with a log and finishes with a completed chair.

For the 90 minute meeting, obviously this is not a full class. Jim is going to go over the the process: riving a log, sharpening, use of a drawknife and spokeshave, bending wood, edge jointing, carving a seat, round mortise and tenon joinery, spindle turning on a lathe, chair assembly and finishing with milk paint.

From the tool list you can figure out this is a Galoot method of building. We have a workbench arranged for the meeting and Jim is going to demonstrate some of the tools and processes.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early eighteenth century. As the principal unit of construction, the Windsor plank fastens the turned and shaved members of the chair back and base, although the two structures are independent of one another. Rustic seating of related form was used on the grounds of Windsor Castle during the early eighteenth century, and the beechwood hills surrounding the town of Windsor provided timber used by the London chairmakers for their nascent Windsor trade. The name Windsor was soon associated with the new style.
