Ok so I am getting bids to have the roof replaced on my house and was looking for some recommendations.

It will be a complete tear off with new plywood.

I have had a couple of estimates one from Mr. Roof and one from Victors roofing out of canton.

Victors has excellent reviews and seems like a top notch outfit but before I pull the trigger I would like to have one more estimate done.

Victors is not cheap but like I said the reviews seem excellent. If you have dealt with Victors Roofing let me know.

So if you have an excellent roofer let me know.

Thanks,
Dean

I had mine done by MR. Roof almost 20 years ago. They replaced several sheets of plywood. I haven't had a problem.
They are very professional.

I had Mr. Roof do my house. The have what they call a "lifetime guarantee". There is a card buried in the paperwork that says you have to have a yearly inspection to keep the warranty valid. Never told me anything about that. They would not return my calls. The work was OK but they destroyed several large plants.

I used American Standard out of Southfield for my garage and will highly recommend them. We had storm damage when a branch punctured the roof and went through the soffit. Called them and a workman came out in a few days. Repaired the roof and soffit. No bill.

I spoke to the owner of American Standard about Mr. Roof's "thunderguard" shingles. He said they are made by GAF and used them on my garage.

I've had our roof done by Billy's Roofing in Livonia. No complaints at all about the quality of the work. Roof is still in good shape but it's only been about six years.

They've been around forever and I keep seeing them servicing others in our neighborhood. We referred some friends who were also happy with their work.

Thanks Steve and everyone else for the suggestions.

Steve I will be calling Billy's for another estimate.

I won't print it here but I can give you a few names from the Detroit area I would not recommend based on the behavior I saw in our neighborhood after a hail storm last year that resulted in everyone in our sub getting a new roof, siding, gutters, in some cases windows, and more. The GC that handled our house used a roofing/siding company that did a good job on the roofing other than leaving a bunch of nails in the street because they didn't give themselves time to clean up before dark. To their credit it POURED the next day so getting the roof done was probably a smart move and I never heard anyone complain about a flat. Their siding crew left a lot to be desired though and they are out of Toledo.

Supposedly one way to find a better roofer is to use one of Owens Corning's Platinum contractors, which will get you a lifetime warranty if they use the full OC system with the right materials. I'd have to reread the paperwork on ours but I think there's even some benefit of that to the next owner. Of course I also see a couple of the companies from my list in the Preferred category.

There was one roofer I would have recommended from down here but something is up with him recently--I see he currently has an F rating with the BBB and his web site is down. Shame because he did work has (maybe had?) been in business for 25 years. Guess I haven't seen his trucks around town lately and I only remember him doing one roof in our sub, though he didn't do anything but roofs and insurance companies and mortgage companies wanted a GC to handle everything.

Whomever you decide to use make sure they install all the correct flashing and do it right. A lot of guys just fake it and move on. It might be worth paying a contractor or architect if you have one close by to stop in and check details while the new roof is going on. ie the step flashing along the chimney or anywhere you have siding meeting the roof.

I'm replacing the siding on your house now and the flashing that should extend up under the siding was cut so short I couldn't install new siding to meet building code. So I spent several hours making corrections to sloppy work.

This is YOUR home, not theirs so if they cut corners you'll be stuck with the very expensive repairs years down the road.

Best of luck, I haven't used anyone personally so I unfortunately can't provide any recommendations.

Where are you located?
Not sure the following will help you.

We and three other neighbors used Rashid Construction for our roofs. We all rate them highly. Just not for sure they travel to wherever you are located, Canton, maybe?

+1 on Rashid...they replaced my roof in about 2006, did first rate work and cleaned up nicely and there have been no issues in the 10 years since.
