I tried to upload a picture file, and got an error that said "Image file type mismatch: expected extension png but extension jpg given."

Are we only able to upload PNG files now?

Well, you must just be special, Mike - it won't let me upload a jpg for some reason... :?

I wonder if the error message is erroneous - the file I'm trying to upload is 1.75mb - is that over the max size limit?

The limit on the admin page says 2MB. Maybe try an image compressor or convert to png. Kind of odd it is denying the upload.

You don't think perhaps that you exported a png file with a jpg name?

I downloaded the pic from a website so I spose the extension could be wrong.
