I've added a new style to the BB that is mobile friendly. You can select it in the User Control Panel. Try it out and send me feedback. I can hack the board to automatically detect a mobile device and switch to this theme but then it might not be what everyone wants.

There's not built in new-posts link in this theme but you can get it by bookmarking the following url.

search.php?search_id=newposts

I'm replying to this on my mobile device.
so far its much easier to navigate then it was before.
I need to see how it is with new posts that I haven't open yet and play with it more before I give it two thumbs up.

When one of your local utilities decide to allow their subscribers to join the 21st century!

Actually, Dave - you might want to give this a try. It has fewer graphic elements and could be a bit snappier for you. Doesn't hurt to give it a try.

This works really well, Mike. Unfortunately it's butt-ugly on a computer! :)

By the way Dave, there's a new satellite service called Xceed or something like that that claims to have solved most of the previous problems. There's nothing they can do about latency because it basically takes something like 1/2s for the signals to travel ground-satellite-ground-satellite-ground, but speeds are much better and they do some other things to improve the overall experience.

Uh? How is the site not dial-up friendly? If you're complaining about the large images that people post, I don't control that. I've pointed any number of times there are programs out there (like shrinkpic) that will automatically shrink them before uploading.

I agree. Having one theme that worked on both form-factors would be better.

The phpBB development team seems to have a blind spot when it comes to mobile. There's just one mobile theme and it was developed by a third party. Seems like something the phpBB development team would have addressed by now given the proliferation of mobile devices.

I'd still like to see us implement Tapatalk.

One huge advantage over just having a mobile skin is that iPad/iPhone users would be able to upload images directly from their device. As of now for an iPad/iPhone user to put images in a post, they would have to upload the images to a photo hosting site that has an app, then link the images in their post on our forum. That's a pain, and of course like many posts with linked images, eventually something will change and the images will be lost.

This would be free for the club and a low cost app download thats usable on many other forums for the user.

I looked at tapatalk. Check out the support forum for phpBB and you'll see there a lot of issues with forum instability. Cool idea but it looks like a support headache.

I don't have an iPad. Will it not let you upload a photo from the device?

There's a style browser for phpBB at http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/minimal/demo/#.

Someone with a mobile device should go through the styles and select a few that work for small format devices. Minimal and Quasar look like possibilities. (Minimal might be good for dial-up as well). Fixed width, narrow formats look like the best candidates to me.

Send me a list of the ones you like and I'll install them.

No, iOS devices cannot upload a file to a web page.

Actually, this site works great on my dial-up. (I was just squawking.) I was trying to find a month-old article on the Ludington Daily News site last week, and it took an hour to find that they weren't going to give it to me, because every "page" of their site that I had to look at, had to make a time-consuming re-load of multiple "graphic elements" (mostly ads, and mostly or entirely the same as the ones I had just seen) before it could get to the real content. I probably won't try that site again. Lumberjocks and OWWM are two other woodworking sites that I can barely work, or can barely tolerate how slowly they come in. You guys are great, and I really appreciate how this site is run by volunteers.

And Steve, thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking that myself and was waiting for a more-explicit suggestion that it might work for me.

And Matt, there is talk of a this-summer upgrading of the cellphone network around here to handle better interweb traffic, so I'm sort-of stalling until that might become active. I do look at the local satellite offerings now and then. Word is they do work fast, but I'm too cheap to pay $1000 for the first year. If there is a cellphone network to compete with them, maybe they will come down and there will be some real market choice in this very rural area.

I'm told iCabMobile http://www.icab-mobile.de/ can upload files from an iPad...

I've tried both Minimal and Quasar style on my phone and I liked Artodia: Mobile and SEO best out of all three of them. It just seems to fit my screen better where I don't have to keep enlarging the screen to tap on a little icon.

I know OWWM has a speed problem many days. Takes forever to load at times. Admins are aware of it.

I can only sleep a few hours since the back surgery. Getting better but then when they cut a big hole in your back you expect to take some time to heal.

Since I have time on my hands I've installed and activated the Tapatalk plugin for the forum. Could someone verify that it's working?

Yep. Just happened to have that pic on my iPad. It's a 2011 Giant 29er XTC 1 that I got a month or so ago from Tree Fort. Love it. I'm kinda embarrassed that I only have about 50 miles on it so far though cus I've been working so much.

When we announce it, we should use their promo entry.
